The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an independent intergovernmental organization formed by member States. Its purpose is to enhance the collaboration between science and policy in the realms of biodiversity and ecosystem services, aiming to promote the conservation and sustainable utilization of biodiversity, as well as fostering long-term human wellbeing and sustainable development. Established in Panama City on April 21, 2012, by 94 Governments, it is important to note that IPBES is not a United Nations body. However, in 2013, with the approval of the UNEP Governing Council and at the request of the IPBES Plenary, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been providing secretariat services to IPBES.
